Once your stone floor has been laid it needs to be protected. This process is called sealing and there are a variety of stone sealers available in order to protect your newly laid floor. Paul Coyle and Son will offer advice and your new floor will look incredible. However, unfortunately, it will immediately start to deteriorate.
What deteriorates stone floors?
The processes leading to the deterioration of stone are known to include salt, moisture, frost damage, mould and human contact.
For internal floors it is unlikely that you will have issues relating to frost damage. So many other issues are caused by moisture, human contact and incorrect usage of cleaning products.
- Moisture; excessive moisture is damaging to any stone floor. The worst-case maybe when water is migrating through your concrete slab and through the stone. However, it may not be this extreme. Moisture sat on the top of tiles can also damage the surface.
- Human contact; oils on your skin can affect the surface of marble tiles by deteriorating the surface.
- Incorrect cleaning products; as with oils from your skin, inappropriate cleaning products attack the surface. If natural stone is innocently cleaned with an acid product, etching and staining can be caused. It is essential to select the correct product to clean any stone floor.
